Canada to Play in FIFA U17 Women's World Cup Semis Against Mexico

This year's FIFA U17 Women's World Cup, taking place in Uruguay, will be a first for Canada as they head to the semi-finals against Mexico. Previous to this year, the Canadians had never made it to the final four of the U17 tournament, having lost in the quarterfinals in 2014, 2012, and 2008. 

In the opening rounds, Canada played Korea Republic (winning 2-0), Spain (losing 5-0), and Columbia (winning 3-0). Exiting the group stage in the second spot, their quarterfinals win comes against a tough Germany team. The game would remain scoreless, until the 83rd minute, when a pass from Caitlin Shaw to captain Jordan Huitema, found the back of the net. 

Their next big game will take place on Wednesday, November 28th at 2pm against Mexico, who just defeated Ghana in shoot-outs. 

One of the notable names for Team Canada, has been Caitlin Shaw of North Vancouver. As her second appearance in the U17 World Cup, was one of only three 15 year olds selected to play in the last U17 World Cup in Jordan in 2016. Now being two years older, Shaw is showing her growth as a player in every element of her game. Caitlin recently earned Most Promising Player and BMO RESP Youth Soccer Player honours at the 2018 Vancouver Whitecaps FC Player Awards ceremony held Oct. 24th in North Vancouver. She joined the Whitecaps program in 2015 and is now a member of the Whitecaps FC Girls Elite Super REX Centre in partnership with BC Soccer. Prior to being picked up by the Whitecaps, Caitlin played with Coquitlam Metro-Ford as part of the 2001 U13 BCSPL program in 2014. That year, the team would win the EA BC Soccer Premier League title.
