U8 - U10 Two Streams

Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club provides two streams of play for Under 8 to Under 10: the Recreation Stream and the Development Stream.

Both streams are designed to support player growth in a fun, challenging, and supportive environment, with a focus on:

  • Technical skill development
  • Understanding of team play and basic formations
  • Agility, balance, coordination, and confidence

Our ability-based team structure allows players to train and compete at a level that best matches their current stage of development, ensuring they are appropriately challenged, engaged, and enjoying their soccer experience. This approach supports Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) and helps create balanced teams and productive learning environments across all levels.

Player Placement & Active Streaming

Recreation and Development teams are formed at Under 8 based on technical staff identification during the Under 7 Initiation Program, CMFSC Training Programs, and CMFSC Camps. There are no formal try-outs or evaluation dates for U8–U10 players, as observation is conducted year-round across our programs.

CMFSC follows an active streaming model, recognizing that player development is not linear and that each child develops at their own pace. Player placement decisions consider many factors, including:

  • Technical ability
  • Physical development
  • Emotional and social maturity
  • Confidence and enjoyment

The goal of observation is to place players where they will have fun, build confidence, be challenged, and avoid boredom or frustration.

Flexibility & Movement

We understand that early physical development (such as size, strength, and speed), combined with environmental factors like family support and opportunities to play, can influence early success. However, this does not define long-term potential.

As a result:

  • There is no fixed timeline for player progression between streams
  • Roster adjustments may occur before, during, or after a season for all U8–U10 age groups
  • Development team rosters may be smaller to allow for movement from the Recreation stream
  • Where appropriate, Recreation stream players may be invited to train and play games with Development teams

This flexibility ensures that players are supported, participation is encouraged, and everyone continues to develop at a pace that suits them.

New Players to CMFSC

Newly registered players will be placed on a Recreation team unless identified through participation in Spring, Summer, or Fall/Winter CMFSC programs.
