Behind the Black & Blue

Coach Spotlight: Meet Coach Mike

Get to know one of the familiar faces around CMFSC — Coach Mike! From his lifelong connection to the club to his favourite soccer memories, here’s a closer look.

What’s your nickname?

Coach Mike (or whatever the kids decide to call me!)

What is your role at CMFSC?

Community Partnerships Specialist & 2011G BCSPL Head Coach

When and what influenced you to start playing soccer? How long have you been part of CMFSC?

Soccer has been ingrained in my family since the day I was born. I had many influences that resulted in me falling in love with the game. My sister was closest to home (she was the athlete of the family), had many cousins who also played, and strong influences such as my short time admiring Dom and the many years of looking up to Alfredo. This has turned into 20+ years as a player, coach and now staff with CMFSC.

Who’s your favourite soccer team?

CMFSC Wolves — because of Coach Carlo 😊

What position did (or do) you play?

Centre Midfield

Beach or mountains?

Beach

What’s your favourite soccer memory?

Some of my favourite soccer memories from CMFSC are the early days of volunteering at Mackin Park — especially Coach Alfredo’s infamous rain dance to keep the day dry!

What’s your favourite thing about soccer?

The opportunity to compete as part of a team rather than individually, and how that shared experience builds lifelong friendships and relationships.

Turf or grass?

Grass

Who is your favourite athlete?

Coach Giovanni Carida

What emoji best represents your personality on the field vs. off the field?

Anything related to sarcasm 😏

Who has been the biggest influence on your soccer journey?

There have been many — it’s hard to name just one. Freddy, Neil, Phebe, and Sara have all been notable influences at different stages, whether as a player, coach, or staff member.

If you could eat only one type of food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Pizza 🍕
