Behind the Black & Blue

Coach Spotlight: Meet Craig Richards

Get to know one of the familiar faces around CMFSC — Coach Craig!

What’s your nickname or what do the kids call you?

My nickname has been Eggy for decades but most of the kids call me Coach Craig.

What is your role at CMFSC?

Parent, Coach, Board Member, past player.

How long have you been part of CMFSC?

11 years.

Who's Your Favourite Soccer Team?

The Pep/Messi era turned me into a Barcelona fan because their approach, technical superiority, and artistic flare exemplified what the beautiful game can be when done perfectly.

What’s your favourite thing about soccer?

I am still playing and I continue to love the collective experience of working towards a common goal and competing followed by the post game social connection - many of my best and longest friendships are a result of playing this game!

Beach or mountains?

Beach

Do you have a favourite soccer memory?

Being in the same room as Pelé. I attended a coaching conference in Philadelphia and he was there — only a few yards away. At CMF, as a player, competing at the Masters Western Nationals in Edmonton and setting up the winning goal on a cross to Andrew Veer who headed it home in front of the beer garden with all of our Masters Women's team cheering us on!

As a coach, either watching our 2010 boys PSG team win Provincials in 2024 after a season of ups and downs, or witnessing the incredible talent and dedication of our 2013 girls SPL team every time they take the field.

Being at the 2022 World Cup in Japan and attending the England/Argentina game when Beckham scored the penalty for a 1-0 win...and having the Japanese fans ask us if we were hooligans!!😂

Best piece of advice you’ve ever received from a coach or teammate?

My coach at SFU, the late Keith Watts, would encourage me to check in with myself every few minutes during a game and ask, "Am I impacting the game? If yes, what else can I do? If no, how can I get involved?"

Do you have a go-to vacation spot?

Maui is my happy place - morning golf, afternoon snorkelling, happy hour cocktails, bbq dinner, and sunset on the beach...rinse and repeat!

Who has been the biggest influence on your soccer journey?

I had the privilege of attending the National Training Centre at SFU from the age of 13 to 21 under the guidance of Bruce Twamley and Chris Bennett. The two of them instilled the standards of professionalism in everything you do and the attention to detail executed with consistency that leads to success! I find myself copying many of their coaching tendencies with my teams today!

Do you have any hidden talents!

I am surprisingly good ping pong player and if you need a witness, you can ask Lacy Kindel how our last game ended up!😉

Who’s your favourite athlete?

I have an incredible amount of respect and admiration for Roger Federer - one of the best to ever grace the tennis court who carried himself as a gentleman and remained humble despite his astonishing accomplishments!

Grass or turf?

Grass

What emoji represents your personality on vs. off the field?

On the field: 🕺off the field: 🥳

If you could only eat one type of food forever, what would it be?

I could happily snack on a charcuterie board every meal of every day!

Favourite TV show or movie genre?

I have seen every movie in the Jason Bourne series at least a dozen times and still can't change the channel when I stumble across one!
